DIY Gift: Homemade Granola

Adding little handwritten tags with twine is very #cottagecore

Our philosophy is simple: there are few gifts as meaningful as something made by hand — especially when they’re thoughtful, practical, and genuinely nourishing.

Every December we like to create a DIY gift to give you inspo and ideas for homemade holiday gifting. This year, our homemade side quest takes us into the kitchen, whipping up an edible gift that never goes to waste.

This Homemade Granola is packed with a nourishing mix of nuts, seeds, oats, and coconut, making it a delicious source of healthy fats, omega-3s, protein, fibre, and a whole lot of love. We're also awarding bonus points when it’s kinder to the earth and your bank account.

Best served layered with Greek yoghurt, fresh berries, a sprinkle of fibre-rich Sea Moss powder, and a drizzle of local honey, this granola is the kind of breakfast (or snack) that keeps you satisfied and energised til lunch.

One of our favourite things about this recipe is how flexible it is. Feel free to omit or swap ingredients based on what you have on hand – just be sure to keep the ratios of nuts, seeds, oats, and sweetener as written. That’s the secret to achieving those perfectly golden, crunchy clusters we all love. This recipe yields approximately 6–7 cups of granola, which can easily be scaled up or down depending on how many jars you’re filling.

For gifting, we’re using a combo empty glass jars we’ve collected throughout the year – there’s something undeniably charming about mismatched shapes and sizes – and we love an eco moment. But if your inner type-A prefers uniformity, jars are easy to source online or from your local variety store.

Before you jump into this recipe, we MUST urge you to stay by the oven: keep a watchful eye and trust your nose. Trust us when we say granola can go from good to burnt in a matter of seconds and we’d hate for your Christmas DIY dreams to go up in smoke.

As always, if you make anything from our Journal, don’t forget to tag us on socials using #OskayaMade. Love you, mean it x

Homemade Granola

Prep Time

10 minutes

Total time

40 minutes

Serves

6-7 cups

Ingredients

Dry

  • 4 cups rolled oats
  • 1¼ cups mixed nuts (we used macadamias, almonds, walnuts, and pecans), roughly chopped
  • ¾ cup pepitas
  • 3 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 3 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 cup coconut flakes
  • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¾ tsp sea salt

Wet

  • ½ cup maple syrup or honey
  • ½ cup melted coconut oil
  • 1½ tsp vanilla bean paste

Instructions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 170°C (fan-forced) and line a large baking tray with baking paper.

Step 2
In a large bowl, mix all dry ingredients until well combined.

Step 3
In a separate bowl or jug, whisk together maple syrup/honey, melted coconut oil, and vanilla.

Step 4
Pour wet ingredients over dry and mix thoroughly - everything should be lightly coated.

Step 5
Tip onto the baking tray and press firmly into an even layer (this is key for clusters).

Step 6
Bake for 15 minutes, rotate tray, then bake another 10–15 minutes until golden.

Step 7
Remove from oven and do not stir. Let cool completely on the tray to form clusters.

Step 8
Once cool, gently break into chunks and transfer to jars.
