Prep Time

Total time

90 minutes

Ingredients

  • Paints (we used watercolours)
  • Paper (A5 watercolour paper works best)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paint palette
  • Water
  • Craft glue
  • Glitter
  • Pens (including metallic ballpoint pens and metallic Sharpies)
  • Various-sized potatoes
  • A knife (for carving the potatoes)

Instructions

Step 1
Start by folding each sheet of A5 watercolour paper in half to create a card shape. If you prefer a different size, feel free to cut the paper down to suit your design.

Step 2
Grab your potatoes and cut them in half (be careful!). These will be your stamps! Potato stamps are a fun and beginner-friendly way to create designs without the need for advanced skills. You can leave them as simple round shapes to mimic Christmas ornaments or carve more intricate designs like stars, trees, or snowflakes.

Step 3
Set up your paint palette and mix a variety of colours to reflect the holiday spirit. Think classic reds, greens, golds, and silvers, or go for a modern palette of pastels and metallics.

Step 4
Dip your potato stamps into the paint, ensuring they’re fully coated, and press them firmly onto the front of your cards. The shapes will look like ornaments or baubles. Play around with colour combinations and overlap the stamps for extra dimension. Let the paint dry completely before moving on.

Step 5
Once the paint is dry, use pens to add finishing touches. Outline your designs, draw strings to make ornaments look like they’re hanging, and add bows, ribbons, or hooks to complete the festive look.

Step 6
Using a paintbrush, apply craft glue to parts of your ornaments, then sprinkle glitter over the top. Tap off the excess and let it dry. The glitter adds a touch of holiday magic that’ll make your cards sparkle.

Step 7
Use metallic pens to embellish your designs further. Add dots, lines, or patterns to give your baubles a chic, polished look. Each card can be completely unique, so let your creativity shine.
